LOCKING – A happy dance-style based on Funk music. It is characterized by abrupt stopping (commonly known as "Lock"). The atmosphere is always fun, happy and wholesome. Originally developed in Los Angeles 30 years ago by Don Campbellock along with the legendary group “The Lockers”, this will become the progenitor of present Hip hop dance style. Hiphop (vertical) dance will not be complete without Locking style.. SDI comment: 100% adrenalin and funk atmosphere. You don’t want to miss this if you like funky style! POPPING – Another dance-type in the FunkStyles umbrella. The whole concept is to contract the different muscles of the body on the funky beat or on a funk rhythm. The idea is similar to robotic dance, but more of a dance. In Robotting, you don’t have to hit the beat. You just emulate robotic movements. In Popping, you are an animated character (i.e. a robot, a puppet, etc..) dancing on the beat. Electric Boogaloo, Waving, King Tut, Botting, Strutting, are all different types of Popping. SDI comment: If you like Old school stuff and want to learn the core of LA hiphop, this is your style! Pop what you got! HIPHOP – The generic dance name for any street-style on modern hiphop music. It is actually a cocktail of different dance styles blended together to form one unique urban dance style. Personality and technique play an important role. Some prefer New style with a touch of Contemporary twist. Some favour New School accentuated by Old school techniques. Others prefer the “Mixed” school. But, no matter which style, attitude makes it distinct. SDI comment: Groove up with style. This is the dance style of the Millenium! HOUSE – Another type of Urban Dance which is based on House music. It is fast and funky. A lot of footworks. Over the years, this dance style has picked up from different dance disciplines from Salsa, hassle, tap, uprocking, breaking, popping etc… It is in costant evolution. SDI comment: If you are crazy about House Music, indulge yourself with this class! BREAKING – A ballistic, stylish and floor-sweeping dance style which constitutes the entire urban culture. It is considered as one of the original and integral part of the raw Hiphop movement. Originally danced to the break-beats or the instrumental part of the music, nowadays, bboys and bgirls will use any kind of music as long as it sets the mood. SDI comment: You go down on the floor with this one! B-GIRLIN – Breakin for the ladies! Learn the tricks suitable for your gender. If you’re a female and want to go down the floor, be rough, be tough, and still maintain your feminility, this course is for you! Girl power! Flexibility, balance, strength and grace are vital in this style. SDI comment: Indispensible for female urban-style dancers. TOPROCK – A bboy or breaking “vertical” dance style which focuses on cool footworks and sensitivity to rhythm. It is a type of Uprocking, a mock-battle dance, and is used by breakers as “transition” to go down the floor, known as “downrock”. It also provides a good warm up and an opportunity for a clear demonstration of the breakers’ skill in music and most of all, style! SDI comment: Get the groove on with this class, before you get down! FREE-STYLE - A dance type which combines as many style as you can! In this class, you will learn how to develop your own style, become more music-sensitive, and learn to overcome fear which is the biggest obstacle in solo dance. No pressure. All fun! SDI comment: It is what you think it is – free-style dancing! If you like joining solo competition or just like to show-off in parties and clubs, you better come to this class! KRUMPING – A super-hyped energetic type of dance which is based on free-styling - that is, anything goes. No style preferences which means you do a little bit of everything. Of course, there are basic steps and "pattern" which have to be learned. But, it's all about freedom of expression... and more... You learn a lot of style on this class. A high-impact dance, it is a good, pumped anaerobic dance work out. SDI comment: This is hardcore street baby :) If you don't want to get krumped in a battle, take this class! MTV – Also known as Video Dance, this style is what people normally see on Music videos on the television. Jazzy, a bit streety, glamourous, easy to remember and most especially commercial are what characterize this particular dance type. Pop and Commercial music are commonly used for this style. SDI comment: This is what you see on television! URBAN/FUNKY JAZZ– A stylish type of dance which combines jazz and funk. It uses basic techniques from jazz discipline accentuated by cool funk groove and attitude. Also known as “Urban Jazz”, this style is popular among studio-trained dancers, dance teachers and choreographers. This is more of a jazz dance with some funk elements, rather than funk with a jazz touch. SDI comment: If you like jazz and at the same time like to be a bit streety, this one is for you! STREET – A type of dance that concentrates more on street style and techniques. It can either be old school or new school. Most of the street dance styles we see nowadays has a bit jazzy mood/style to it. This is commonly known as “The corrupted jazz”. It is a popular style frequently seen on MTVs. There are, however, many street-style dances, and they continue to evolve. SDI comment: You want to learn different street-style dances, and be "streetwise", you should come to this class! JAZZ – An African-american dance tradition which began in the late 1800s. Its history is closely linked with the history of Jazz music. The emphasis is on self-expression, and thus, the style continually changes based on the interest, situation and personal preference of the dancer. Older forms of Jazz dance includes Tap, swing, and other vaudeville dance styles. The present Jazz style has more of ballet techniques and a lot of personality. It is an all-time favourite american classic. SDI comment: This is the dance of the present time. You do not want to miss this one if you are serious in dance! IRISH DANCE - The history of Irish dance is linked with the development of Irish traditional music, and can be traced back in Pre-christian Ireland. Over the years, the forms changed from the influence of other dance styles from continental europe, particularly a dance called Quadrille. Different dance masters came and taught all over Ireland. There are basically two types of Irish dance: Performance dance also known as Stepdance (i.e. group dance) and social dance. Likewise, there are 2 dance training categories: soft-shoe and hard-shoe dancing. In hard-shoe class, you learn to make music and rhythm with your feet, and in soft-shoe, you will learn to fly!

TAP DANCE - is an all-time american classic. Developed in the turn of the 19th century in the United States, this will become the "Grandfather of streetdance". The whole concept is similar to Irish dance which is to make music with your feet, but the dance part is more loose and casual. Tap shoes have metal plates on the sole which produce the sound. For this, tap dancers are also knowned as "Percussive musicians." It is the early form of Jazz dance.
SDI comment: Fancy dancing like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers? Or you just simply like to dance more and "drum" with your feet. You better take this class! SWING DANCE / LINDY HOP - This class is an introduction to the authentic street dances of lindy hop, charleston, and 30s jazz. Lindy hop is an African American couple dance that originated in Harlem, New York in 1927. It is rooted in the even earlier dances of charleston and tap, and the street dances of today, like breakin', come from lindy hop. It is danced to jazz and blues. At the advanced level it is known for its fast footwork and high flying acrobatics.
CONTEMPORARY/MODERN – A general term for modern and post-modern dance types which focus highly on expression of feelings and the dance itself rather than dance codes, structures and techniques. It is among the popular dance styles which emerged in the first half of the 20th Century. Often on bare feet, contemporary dancers concentrate more on the grounded quality of the movement as well as floormoves. It gives particular attention to gravity, drive and flow of the movement and emotion. SDI comment: A spectacular and powerful modern dance-art type which is very useful even in hiphop styles! BALLET – Commonly known as the Classical dance which implies that it is the root of modern dances. The word “ballet” comes from the Italian word “balletto”. The root word is “ballo” which simply means dance. The art of ballet according to dance experts originated in the 1400s in the Italian Renaissance court. However, it was France which developed and made it popular internationally. Its obvious influence and contribution are easily seen in most of the ballet terms which have French origin. Classical ballet class consists of various bar, center, “petit and grand allegro”(small and big jumps) exercises. Adopting the style and the musicality of the movement plays a vital role in the learning process. SDI comment: Everyone knows that this is a precious root of jazz and modern dance. It provides a strong foundation for physical and mental development that can be very useful in the learning different dance styles. BROADWAY JAZZ - Learn very exciting and famous styles and choreography of great musicals! Broadway style class. SDI comment: If you love West-side story, Fame, Grease, Sound of the music, Chicago, Saturday night fever, Cats musicals and such, this is your class! IMPROVISATION - An art of dancing which concentrates on being sensitive and respondent to the stimulus of the environment of the moment. This class teaches you to move and come up with movement on the spot. It helps develop skill and creativity.

PILATES - A system of physical exercises, developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900, which concentrates on the core of the body. It strengthens and elongates the muscles of the body which you do not even know that exist. Particular attention is given to the muscles that support the spine, wherein the posture and balance are dependent upon.
SDI comment: If you want to feel lean and tall, you should be faithful to attend this class.
ACRO/BALLET - Gymnastics incorporated with ballet. Tumbling and dancing all in one! In this class, you learn to do the different forms of cartwheel, vertical handstand, and more.. Recommended for those who wish to strengthen their weak arms, develop equilibrium, and overcome fear of doing acrobatic moves.

LYRICAL - A contemporary class on soft and beautiful movements that flow according to the lyrics of the song. Modern style. This is where emotions become the dance, and dance becomes emotions. Learn to tell a story without words. Graceful. Soulful.

LATIN - Rich movement to passionate and beautiful latin music. Fast movement and lots of hip action. Learn the classic latin steps samba, cha cha, kumbia, salsa, and more... Develop your latino groove both in individual dancing and in couple dancing as well.

WAACKIN - According to legendary Shabba-Doo of the Lockers, this dance style came from popular club dance styles like Garbo, in Los Angeles sometime between the 70s-80s. It is similar to Locking, but has a more feminine touch to it - it is glamourous and stylish. Vogueing (posing like Vogue models) is usually mix with it. Waackin was popularized by Shabba-Doo in the movie "Breakin" and soon became a global sensation.
SDI comment: This dance style has come back with power in our time. Funky ladies and gentlemen, check this out! This is soo much fun!!! GYMNASTICS - A special class on physical exercises for the improvement of flexibility, strength, coordination, balance and grace. The course is specifically designed as dance supplement. In this class, students will learn basic gymnastic stunts such as handstand, cartwheel, flips and similar.

CLASS LEVELS Pre-beginners – Suitable for those who have no prior knowledge and experience of the dance style. Beginners – A good class for those who have some understanding of the dance style, but has not learned nor explored enough to understand the basic mechanics and techniques. Suitable for those who would like to learn the foundation and the basic knowledge. This is where you learn to be graceful. Intermediate – The perfect class for improving coordination and memory. The students are expected to have learned already the basic techniques. This is where you learn to develop your grace and movement quality amidst technical movements. Advance – This is for those who have reached a level that enables them to pick up long and complex choreography in a snap. A good foundation is a pre-requisite for this class. This is where it all begins! |
